Hello and welcome to Tulsa tumbled talk with justice tumbling company, the one and only Tulsa tumbling show where we are Tulsa tumbling experts, answer the questions that we get from parents and athletes on a daily basis. We are your hosts, coulton cruise and rusty fleur, and we are the owners of justice tumbling company in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Now, Tumbling Tulsa today is the day that we are going to be talking about something that may be a bit of a touchy subject. I feared it may not be what you want to hear, but it may be exactly what you need to hear. Rusty. I certainly don’t mean to be rude, but I’m going to let you start off and take this one.
Yes. Our subject today is your attitude and your future.
Tumbling Tulsa. Now I totally understand the attitude part. Do you, are you sure you understand what I do? I understand the attitude part, but what does it my attitude have to do with my future?
Listen, as much as we hate to admit it, we’re getting older and with age comes experience and in our experience, we’ve seen how your attitude towards things now towards schoolwork, uh, just your job and of course tumbling can reflect the type of adult you become and the attitude you have toward things. Then of course, attitude isn’t everything. There’s also a lot of hard work involved, but if you can change how you look at an undesirable situation, it will definitely become an easier situation to deal with. That was an absolute knowledge bomb. Hit the mark. Big One. That’s a big one. That’s a big one. When I said we don’t, we don’t want to make anybody upset. Tumbling Tulsa, we’re just going to tell you in our professional opinion what we’ve seen. Um, now let’s first talk about the attitude of the athletes. Colton, could you explain some attitudes that could hinder a kid’s learning and growth?
So before I go any further, I do want to give a disclaimer. Okay. If you are easily offended or your feelings get hurt, if you’re a fragile butterfly, you might click away from this podcast because we are going to be talking about attitudes and it might be your attitude
or an attitude that you’ve seen in an athlete or we’re going to be going over coaches attitudes as well. Tumbling Tulsa. So
the first one is laziness. Now, that word, some people don’t like that word. We can see laziness on an athlete from the minute they start stretching and doing their warmups. Too often it comes down to an athlete training and they know what they’re supposed to be doing, but they choose not to. It’s like they Tumbling Tulsa They finished those round offs instead of a rebound, it’s like a half slumped over, like hop off their toes. And that’s not going to help you train for the skills that
you’re going to be throwing that day because subconsciously you’re also teaching yourself bad habits. Not meaning to, but the way you warm up is going to be the way you tumble. So if you come in with that Lazy Warmup, like Colin said, we can see it. The second you walk in and we try to correct it as soon as we can. This is also an attitude that an employer can see as soon as you walk through the door in real life situation. Absolutely as the are adulting right now. We as coaches do sometimes have a hard time dealing with this attitude just because it almost feels more of a respect thing, a respect for our time, respect for us as coaches, and we’re there to work with you and help you and we’re going to be on top of our game. Tumbling Tulsa So we really want you to be on top of your game.
This is our passion. So when people kind of almost mocked that passion, that’s where it’s hard for us to kind of be in that positive attitude all the time. And our second negative attitude is a, the defeated attitude coming into a class or private, Tumbling Tulsa, looking like you absolutely don’t want to be there. Like it was the worst thing in the world for you to have to walk into the building. We understand everybody’s dealing with something. Everybody has some sort of struggle in their life. That’s why we always say that our gym should be a fun environment, is stress free, stress free environment, leave your troubles out the door and come in and just focus on something that can really be fun if done correctly. Come and focus on yourself. The world has such a negative pressure on our athletes as long as
well as ourselves and people that we know, you know the world is always trying to beat you down, so come in here to our gym and work on yourself and be the best that you can be. Now, the next negative skill, hindering attitude is the know it all mentality Tumbling Tulsa
attitude. That one sounds. Can you explain that one?
Yeah, so that is. We’ve seen it a lot in athletes who had been tumbling for a long time or they tumble at a reputable, like all star gym. They kind of will ignore what other coaches say because they don’t work at the gym that they go to or they think that they’re tumbling is so good that there’s not anything that the coach could possibly tell them that would make it any better.
Yes. These are your eye rollers. Tumbling Tulsa. I’ve heard it 100 times, so why do you keep telling me? Well, I’m telling you because you keep doing it wrong. So we told
you it’s not what you want to hear. It’s what you need to hear Tumbling Tulsa
and moving on before it gets too heated. We’re moving onto the one coach athlete that’s like the athlete that can only learn or get spotted by one coach and moving, moving to another coach. They’ll try to avoid their line or not listened to anything. Another coach has to say. Like we said, we’re not. We don’t believe we know at all. Tumbling Tulsa, we’re always willing to learn. Uh, so our athletes should be the same. If an athlete tells me something they think is different, they think should be done differently and it works. Absolutely. We will do that. That’s what we’re going to do, but we want what’s best for our athletes no matter what gym you go to
and really that comes back down to real world situations where whenever you get older and you have bosses, you’re not just going to have one boss. You’re going to have multiple higher ups that you have to answer to and then moving from one job to another. You might have a completely different boss that has a completely different attitude and you have to know how to be versatile and work with all kinds of people and to say the least. At least give that other coach, Tumbling Tulsa that other person the chance to show you that they do know what they’re talking about or just give them the respect that they deserve. As an adult.
There used to be this crazy saying that people used to say, back in the day, that was a respect your elders, but I don’t know if you hear that that much anymore.
I don’t know. I don’t know. Now we have one more negative skill hindering attitude and it’s not even so much an attitude. It’s more of a situation that we see pretty often and that is the Mama athlete.
Now I’m a what is that, the Mava athlete,
so it’s where the athlete could care less about being there. It’s the athlete being there for their Mama and I’m, their mom wants them to be a highly skilled tumbler because she was a highly skilled tumbler or maybe she wasn’t that she wants them to be, Tumbling Tulsa, that puts us as coaches and the athletes in a very awkward situation because the, the athlete isn’t really caring about getting better, but they’re there because they have to be.
Now, like we’ve said 100 times, every athlete is different. We as coaches can work with every one of those skill, hindering attitudes as long as the athlete is willing to work hard and be open to correction. Being coachable will go a long way in tumbling, but also down the line in real life situations, whether it’s from us or another coach. It could be the greatest coach in the world, but if you’re not willing to listen, you’re not gonna get anything out of it in touch. All right, Tumbling Tulsa.
So now we’re going to quickly go over some attitudes as coaches that can be skill hindering as well as hinder the progressions for those athletes. And the first one is my personal pet peeve because we’ve seen this in so many tumbling gems, not only in our area but in gyms all over the place and it is an unrealistic, overly positive coaching attitude. This is a popular type of coaching attitude because it motivates the athlete into trying new skills, but what that does is it gives the athlete a false confidence and pushes the athlete to where they’re doing skills that they really shouldn’t be doing yet, Tumbling Tulsa and they really need to be mastering those skills one step at a time and not moving
quickly. Now, moving on, Tumbling Tulsa, the one I personally hate to see is the over negative overly negative coaching. Uh, this kind of coaching usually involves having to yell out an athlete to get them to perform. Some athletes respond to this kind of coaching and other athletes will completely shut down to this kind of coaching. Uh, I believe coaching should be fun and a positive experience. So I don’t try to do this coaching at all
here at justice. Tumbling Tulsa We make sure that we don’t have any of these negative coaching attitudes just because we want our athletes to grow and continue to progress safely as well as gaining confidence within themselves.
We’re looking for the attitude in our athletes to be coachable, to be willing to make their correction right away instead of hearing that same correction for weeks or months before even giving it a try. Um, believe it or not, we do know what we’re talking about. So just try it the first time because like we said, coachability goes a long way. No matter if you’re naturally talented or you’re one of those athletes who asked to put in extra work. Tumbling Tulsa if you don’t think that we know what we’re talking about, question us, ask us questions and we’ll tell you why we believe that. And if you try it and it doesn’t work, we can look, look at other options available because for every skill there’s 10 other ways that we can teach it.
